Living and Working in Korea Essay The case of Ellen Moore is very interesting and diverse, because it shows different reasons why problems can occur in a project management and teamwork and highlights how cultural differences can affect the work in a very negative way. There are several reasons why the project has run into problems. Some of these could have been foreseen but some not. The main problem is that there were wrong decisions made when creating the team and also some risks were incorrectly assessed to be less important than they actually turned out to be. First of all in selecting project management representative Andrew Kilpatrick underestimated the cultural differences and did not listen enough to the warning from American consultants with WSI in Korea that it is impossible to send a woman to work in Korea. I donââ¬â¢t think it is completely impossible for a woman to work in Korea, but Ellen should have been more prepared and more informed about the local traditions particularly about the team building and after-work dinners and how the Koreansââ¬â¢ respect for position and status would influence the teamsââ¬â¢ behavior. From the case it seems like too many things came as a surprise to Ellen and it was hard to focus on the primary tasks. Another problem was in the team composition especially in allocating roles. There were 2 project co-managers ââ¬â Ellen and Jack ââ¬â assigned to the team. But Jack was given an impression that he will be the sole project leader. For this reason Ellenââ¬â¢s addition to the team created tension between them and from the beginning and this undermined their chances to work together for the same goal. If it was decided to have 2 equal project manager positions, then their roles should have been allocated. For example each project manager would have specific areas of responsibilities and the rest of the team would be informed about these responsibilities. Instead both project managers ended up fighting for the power instead of working towards the common goal. The development of the events in the team also suggests that it was a wrong decision to appoint 2 team managers, because it is clear that the team performed better when they were led by one team leader ââ¬â whenà Jack was around the Korean team would follow his instructions, but when Jack was away and Ellen was the only leader the team cooperated and worked well under her supervision and coaching. The third problem was the expertise and experience of the Korean consultants. The American part of the team was only partially informed about the teamsââ¬â¢ qualifications. But it soon turned out that none of them had sufficient previous experience to work on this project. That the teamsââ¬â¢ inexperience turned out to be one of the reasons the project ran into problems is partially because of Ellenââ¬â¢s overconfidence. When she realized what is the actual qualification and experience of the team members she thought she could work around it and train the people on the team. Instead of suggesting changes in the team she relied on her skills as a coach to improve the situation. All these reasons are to blame that the project is in serious trouble and without clear action plan the project cannot be put back on track. One solution that could be done to get the project back on schedule is for Andrew to take on a more active role in the teams work and become the team leader in Korea and oversee both Ellen and Jack and the whole team. Since both Mr.Song and Mr.Park think that Ellen is the problem and is not effective, there is not much she can do to continue the role as the team leader because the supervisors in Korea donââ¬â¢t back her up. And in this situation it would be hard for her to become the team leader over Jack. If all the team members remain in their place under Andrews supervisions, roles to each member should be allocated also tem members need to be motivated to work together to achieve the goal. Rewards for cooperation and tem work could be in place here. Another alternative could be removing Jack from the team and find a Korean consultant that has experience with SI projects. This solution would eliminate the tension in the team and also increase the professional capacity of the team. If the budget of the project allows one more possibility would be to include additional team members with more expertise to assist the team. Also changing the team members could be a solution, butà there might be not enough time to completely change the team and still manage to finish the project on schedule. Although the situation is rather complex because the team is dealing not only with professional problems but also with personnel problems and problems caused by not understanding the different culture, there are some things that Ellen could have done differently. First of all she should have tried to draw Andrews and Mr. Parkââ¬â¢s and Mr. Songââ¬â¢s attention to the fact that the team members are not qualified enough to work on this project in the early stages of the project. She should have asked to either change the weakest members of the team or have additional training for the team to raise their level of expertise. As for cooperation with Jack I think that the fight for the power between the two of them was inevitable, but one way how to try to deal with the situation could have been Ellenââ¬â¢s initiative to establish some ground rules on how they interact with the team, how they divide responsibilities between them. Her background information shows that she had previous experience in leading teams so probably also knowledge in conflict resolution and motivating people. Clearly Jack needed some motivation to become a team player. But altogether I think that most of the problems occurred because Ellenââ¬â¢s supervisors made wrong assessments about the project and the situation and also made some bad decisions in the beginning.

Stanley Milgram, a social psychologist, conducted an experiment in 1963 about human obedience that was deemed as one of the most controversial social psychology experiments ever (Blass). Ian Parker, a writer for the New Yorker and Human Sciences, and Diana Baumrind, a psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley, responded to Stanley Milgramââ¬â¢s experiment. These articles represent how the scientific community reviews and scrutinizes each otherââ¬â¢s work to authenticate experiment results. Baumrind focuses on the moral and ethical dilemma while, Parker focuses more on the experimentââ¬â¢s actual application. The experimentââ¬â¢s original intent was to determine if society would simply obey to authority when put under pressure by an authoritative figure. Milgram put a twist on the experiment asking the age-old question of, ââ¬Å"if the Germans during WWII were simply obeying to authority when carrying out the Holocaust or were they all acting on their ownâ⬠(Blass). The test subject, or teacher, would administer electric shocks to the learner, a paid actor, when the learner incorrectly answered the word pairings. The teacher thought the learner was receiving electric shocks when in reality the learner was not receiving any shocks. An instructor, the authoritative figure, was sitting behind the teacher reassuring the teacher that the shocks may be painful but would not inflict permanent damage. Throughout the experiment, the teacher can be seen looking back towards the instructor for permission on whether to continue or stop (ABC).The teacher instructed the learner to continue even when the learner cried out in pain and begged for the experiment to stop (ABC). Milgram does arrange for a friendly meeting between the teacher and the learner after the experiment. The meeting was supposed to relieve all tensions that are burdened upon the teacher throughout the experiment. Baumrind does not believe that this simple meeting between the teacher and learner was enough to relieve all tensions of the experiment (227). She simply suggests that Milgram should have offered a psychiatric evaluation or therapy to the patients after participating in the experiment (227). For many individual students preparing to graduate from high school, wondering whether or not they should pursue a higher education at a university or other learning institute is an issue that weighs heavily on their minds. It is a very difficult decision that depends on many different factors, such as the individualââ¬â¢s personal goals. Some students choose to go straight from high school directly into the workforce after graduating. Other students choose to go into the military after graduating from high school. While these are all different options, recent research indicates that higher education is extremely valuable.Recent research indicates that higher education is extremely valuable. Matarazzo, Matarazzo states that the average intelligence quotient (IQ) of a high school graduate is 105 points. He also states that the average intelligence quotient (IQ) of a college four-year graduate is 115 points.To quote Sociologist Linda Gottfredson of the University of Deleware, ââ¬Å"IQ scores predict a wider range of important social outcomes than perhaps any other psychological trait; â⬠¦ bright people have a tail wind in virtually all aspects of life. â⬠What she means by this quote is that the higher an individualââ¬â¢s intelligence quotient, the higher the quality of life that they will have. This is true because those with higher intelligent quotients have higher problem solving abilities that correlate to better life qualities.In an Australian study studied by Gottfredson, motor vehicle fatalities were studied, correlating intelligence quo tients with motor vehicle fatalities. In the study, there was a direct correlation discovered between those with lower intelligence quotients, and higher death rates per 10,000 people. Most, if not all, universities and other higher education systems offer many activities in which students will get to meet many other new students. Many students will meet new friends who often become some of the best friends that theyââ¬â¢ve ever had. There are also almost always sports, clubs, and other activities to get involved with that would be unavailable to those not attending a higher education system.Many people participate on sports teams in high school such as football, baseball, field hockey, soccer, basketball, wrestling, track and field, and softball, to name a few. After they graduate high school they do not have many opportunities to participate in their favorite sports ever again. Whether it is for competitiv e purposes or just for enjoyment purposes, universities offer the opportunities to participate in some of their past favorite sports, or experiment with new ones.Another opportunity that students of higher education systems have exposure to that those who do not attend higher education systems do not have as readily available is the opportunity to study abroad. Studying abroad means taking educational classes in a country other than oneââ¬â¢s own. Unless they are particularly financially wealthy, the majority of the individuals that do not attend higher education systems never get the opportunity to live in foreign countries for the entire length of a semester.According to a BBC news report, about 114,000 higher education system students study abroad each year at universities in foreign countries. Studying abroad is a great opportunity for higher education system students to take advantage of. When one studies abroad, they get the chance to learn about another culture through fir st hand experience, they get the chance to learn how to fluently speak a foreign language by merely being exposed to it for a period of time, and it is very prestigious to have on a resume. Studying abroad is just another example of a way that higher education systems give their students more opportunities than those who do not attend them. Higher education systems can also be considered very valuable because they provide individuals with life skills that are essential to being successful in life. While studying at a higher education system, one is forced to develop essential time management skills much more so than at the high school level.With time needed for studying, attending classes, completing homework, relaxation, and doing fun things as well, one needs to manage their time in order to avoid failing out. These time management skills help o ut individuals later on in life. Another important life skill that individuals who attend higher education systems gain is money management skills. Some higher education system students work part-time jobs, but the majority are unable to find the time to do so on top of their schoolwork, so the only money they have for spending is either money their parents give to them, or money that they saved up before going to college.Either way, most students are on tight financial budgets that require discipline to maintain. Students learn to only spend money on things that they absolutely need, and to save up their money rather than spending it all at once. These money management skills help the students later in life. While attending a higher education system offers many positives, it also offers certain negatives. One negative is the fact that higher education schools are often very expensive. Colleges are expensive, and it is hard for a lot of families to afford to pay for, however this is not a good reason for not attending.If one starts early enough, they can save money, look into financial aide opportunities, and apply for scholarship opportunities to help pay for their tuition. It has already been shown that the amount of money that college students will make after graduation is much higher than the amount of money those who do not attend will make, so if someone can make sacrifices in order to pay for college then when they have a career someday they will make it all back plus more. Another negative to going straight to a higher education system is that people are getting later starts to their careers.Some people choose to work minimum wage jobs, or take other opportunities like opening their own businesses. These options are all respectable, and sometimes do end up making people large sums of money, but the facts given to us by the United States Bureau of Labor show that the vast majority of the time this is not the case. No matter how tempting it may be to tak e a good wage job right after high school, it is always more financially beneficially to attend a higher education system.In conclusion, the evidence shows us that attending higher education systems is extremely valuable. One reason that it is extremely valuable is that it offers many great financial benefits. Another reason is that it makes individuals more intelligent. Those who attend higher education systems also have more opportunities available to them than those who do not attend them. Lysistrata Essays - Lysistrata, Women In War, Aristophanes, Peace Lysistrata Lysistrata is a play written in 411 BC by Aristophanes. At that time in Greek history, the city-states were constantly warring with one another. Consequently, the women were left at home. One woman, Lysistrata, was so fed up with the fighting that she called all of the women of Greece to a meeting. When they finally showed up, Lysistrata presented her plan for peace: no sex until the wars ceased. She eventually convinced all of the other women that this was the only way to bring peace to the land. The men were miserable and ultimately they negotiated a treaty to stop the hostilities. This play has its merits and its downfalls. As a whole, however, it is well written, humorous, and most importantly, it has a purpose. On first glance, the play seems to be no more than a simple, comical story. Aristophanes wrote the play not only to entertain, but also to make a stand against warfare. He believed that war was an abnormal state of affairs. At the opening of the play, Lysistrata has calle d a meeting of all the women and is impatiently waiting for them. She says that she has spent long, sleepless nights agonizing over the solution to the wars. She tells Kalonike, Only we women can save Greece! As the rest of the women arrive, she informs them of her plan. The women are resistant to the idea of no sex at first. They then realize that what Lysistrata says is true. The women take an oath and swear to one another that they will have nothing to do with their husbands until the wars cease. Aristophanes' use of women as the peacemakers shows the natural role of women as nurturers. He is displaying how life should be, without war. In times of peace, men are working at home alongside their wives. When war comes about, women are left to do all the work, domestic and otherwise. This upsets the balance of daily life. Aristophanes is urging his fellow Greeks to restore peace and therefore life as they once knew it. As the play progresses, the men are in extreme pain and agony fro m the withholding of sexual activities. They come to the conclusion, grudgingly, that the women are indeed correct. To renew Greece, the fighting must end. And they are the ones with whom it has to begin. The men arrange a treaty and then celebrate with the others, Athenian and Spartan alike. But, as I can imagine, all, women and men, are anxious to get home. With this play, Aristophanes' goal was to tell an amusing story and also to spur his countrymen to resolve their differences for the sake of Greece and Greek life. We now know that they did not heed Aristophanes warnings. The Golden Age of Greece did come to an end, mostly because of the extreme pride and arrogance of the individual city-states. Aristophanes did his best to convince them, but such is the sage advice: it often goes unheeded, much to the dismay of all concerned.

The European Convention on Human Rights and its effect on the UK Judiciary Essay The UK legislation incorporated the provisions of the ECHR or European Convention on Human Rights, with the enactment of the 1998 HRA or Human Rights Act. This measure imposed a grave responsibility on the English judiciary, with which it was in the least experienced. Every individual in the UK has certain rights and this new legislation compels the courts to decide whether any of these rights have been trampled upon by the different measures adopted by the UK government . In the process of this exercise, the judiciary has to scrutinize even the legislative actions of Parliament, and it has to analyze the effect of the acts of the state on individuals or groups. As such, the national courts, while conducting judicial reviews, had concentrated on whether the acts and rulings of government institutions and officials had been within the boundaries prescribed by the extant legislation. In this endeavour, the UK courts had, in general, ignored such transgressions by the Parliament . The enlargement of the scope of their rulings had proved to be quite a daunting task for the judiciary. In addition, section 6 of the Human Rights Act, requires the courts to conform to the rights provided by the ECHR. Any incompatibility with these rights requires the specific sanction of Parliament. Consequently, the courts have to conduct inquiries that are protective in nature and not prosecutorial . The Human Rights Act is efficiently implemented in the UK and it cannot be replaced by a separate Bill of Rights. The UK courts have greater flexibility in pronouncing verdicts and this was enabled by the HRA. The HRA also enabled the UK courts to function along the lines of the ECtHR. The decisions of the UK courts, in the context of human rights, will undoubtedly have an important influence on the jurisprudence of the ECtHR. Thus, the UK is now enjoying the full advantage of the margin of appreciation provided by the Strasbourg court . The provisions of the ECHR have been integrated with the British law through the Human Rights Act. Under section 4 of the HRA, the House of Lords and the Court of Appeal can derogate from the ECHR by declaring incompatibility with the ECHR. However, national courts are not permitted to declare statutes as incompatible with the ECHR. In the event if any national court declaring a statute as being in conflict with the ECHR; or in the event the ECtHR specifying that certain statutes are in conflict with the ECHR, the government can rescind or amend such conflicting statutes, under the provisions of sections 10 and 11. Section 12 of the HRA requires both the Houses of Parliament to pass a resolution, which seeks to implement such remedial orders of the government, which seeks to amend or to repeal a conflicting statute. However, in cases of urgency, a minister can do so and subsequently, seek the necessary approval . In addition, there are other requirements to be fulfilled. First, under section 3, the government must adopt a procedure to interpret the provisions of the HRA and the procedure it adopts must not conflict with the ECHR. Second, the HRA imposes on the public authorities a new legal obligation under which they must not act in a manner that is incompatible with the ECHR. Section 6 of the HRA states that this duty may not apply if a statute specifically requires them to act in such manner. As such, the HRA provides substantial grounds to oppose constitutional principles and the bill of rights . The current situation is that the development of legislation has fallen to the lot of the judges. This is an unprecedented development. The UK judges have to interpret and implement the Human Rights Act, in accordance with the Commission on Human Rights and the jurisprudence of the court; however, this jurisprudence is not binding upon them. Consequently, they enjoy a significant amount of leeway in modifying the tenets of the ECHR to suit the circumstances obtaining in the UK. This makes the courts susceptible to the criticism that they have injected their own values into the legal system . In addition, the ever increasing importance of the judiciary will bring considerable attention to bear on their competence, structure and character. Despite the seeming vividity of the incorporation of the ECHR into the legislation of the UK; the effectiveness of this measure, to a significant extent, is dependent on the stance adopted by the judiciary, in this regard . As such, the European Union is very much seized with the task of engendering human rights, as is evident from its action of specifying a new charter of rights to be implemented on its schedule. This new charter is certain to prove much more effective than the Human Rights Act. This is due to the fact that the UK judiciary would have to uphold the rights bestowed by it, even at the cost of directly overriding the existing legislation . In the United Kingdom the citizens have fundamental rights. These fundamental rights are enforced within certain limitations and are subject to other legislation. The operation of the fundamental rights is usually seen in the context of their negative implications. For example, the right to freedom of speech is respected to the extent to which it does not contravene other legislation. Thus, fundamental rights are enforced only when they do not attract any legal provisions . The UK courts interpret the provisions of section 6(3) (b) of the Act in a restricted and limited manner. This narrow interpretation by the courts results in non inclusion of a majority of government branches in the definition of Public Authority. This ultimately results in the improper implementation of the rights provided by the ECHR in the UK. The courts are taking the institutional position of regulatory bodies in determining whether they are public authorities, under the scope of section 6(3) (b) of the Human Rights Act. In cases of infringement of human rights, the UK courts deal with them by adopting a proportionality test in an effort to arrive at a balanced ruling. This concept is at variance to the narrow interpretation that was being accorded in the past. The UK courts employ a broader and more balanced approach, in order to have greater flexibility in making decisions, in accordance with the precepts European Court of Human Rights. This wider application of the Human Rights Act by the UK Courts is aimed at ensuring the human rights and personal interests of the general public . The United Kingdom has no written constitution. Legal experts consider that in the absence of a written constitution, it is very difficult for the executive or legislature to operate independently. The royal prerogative and parliamentary sovereignty are the basic concepts that shape the UKââ¬â¢s legal order. In WEBB v OUTRIM , Lord Halsbury had stated that an Act of Parliament should be an Act of Parliament and none can go beyond that concept . The HRA integrated the ECHR into the laws of the UK. This enabled the ECtHR to decide human rights cases, of the UK. The UK has to comply with the decisions of the ECtHR. In this manner, the ECtHR gradually assumed control over the British judiciary. It criticised the new Prevention of Terrorism Act 2005, because it infringed the human rights of British citizens who are also citizens of Europe. It pointed out that almost every aspect of the governmentââ¬â¢s attempt to curb terrorism on British soil was a violation of human rights . The United Kingdom had been a signatory to the ECHR and complied with the Convention. The British courts are directly enforcing the provisions of the ECHR. The HRA had successfully integrated the British law with the ECHR. The domestic courts in the UK are efficiently making use of the ECHR as an interpretative instrument in cases of legislative uncertainty. Individuals whose basic rights have been infringed can take the UK government to the ECtHR by filing a suit before it . This right of individuals can only be used after all domestic legal remedies have proved futile in redressing the wrong done to an individual. Therefore, bringing an appeal before the ECtHR entails a costly and elaborate procedure. However, this situation has been rendered much simpler at present. If a domestic court finds an act to be conflicting with the provisions of ECHR, then that court can directly award relief or remedy to the victim. It may award damages to the extent that it finds appropriate . Such a remedial action may include the award of compensation for damages ensuing from a breach of the ECHR rights. The court may allow the dispute to be relied on in other proceedings. The extensive powers bestowed upon the courts by the ECHR, has generated considerable constitutional objections. . The liberalization of the process of the interpretive method, which is a vital component of the HRA, poses a much greater danger to a democracy, in comparison to the predicted deference of Parliament towards assertions of incompatibility. Apparently, it looks as if there is greater validity for the right of Parliament to decide upon the law to be implemented in the UK, rather than the present interpretive procedure. Nevertheless this right of Parliament is susceptible to the current interpretive methodology . At its worst, the Parliament can enact a piece of legislation at its will and pleasure, and the national courts can rescind it on the grounds that it is not in accordance with the ECHR. The right of Parliament to make laws and the right of the judiciary to interpret them are equally and firmly ensconced. There is near unanimity of agreement regarding the view that it is the prerogative of the courts to interpret the law. This is due to the understanding that it comprises a component of the process of adjudication, which is considered to be its exclusive domain . The upshot is that Parliament cannot discard judicial interpretation of statute. In addition, it cannot express misgivings about the interpretive methods adopted by the judiciary. The reason is that such acts violate the constitution, in addition to being difficult to justify politically. Thus, judicial prerogative is invulnerable to the demands of democracy. In this manner there is the very real danger that the judiciary could make an inroad into legislative authority. This would render the HRA a very potent instrument for stifling or curbing elected governments, and could possible generates a number of doubts regarding its democratic qualities . The ECtHR assumed a secondary place in protecting human rights in Europe, and left the primary task or the active role to the member statesââ¬â¢ legal systems. It had reduced its role to a subsidiary position, with respect to the national judiciary. From the perspective of the Convention it did so for two reasons. First, the ECHR had remained as the minimum standard for basic human rights. By assuming this position, it would be easier for the Member States to attach themselves to it without discontent and to easily comply with the minimum standards of human rights protection . The ECHR had aspired to become the first step in the ladder of protection of human rights, and it pre empted any descent below this conceptual ladder. Secondly, it aspired to distance itself from dealing with cases, in which the member states could possibly breach these minimum standards. It is practically impossible for it to deal with each and every case of violation of human rights. Therefore it did not aspire to be a threshold for every claim concerning human rights . This step forced the member states to shoulder the major responsibility for protecting human rights in their states. Article 13 ECHR requires the Member States to be under an obligation to protect the human rights of their citizens. Moreover, the appellants are under an obligation to approach all national legal avenues before invoking the ECtHR. They can approach it only when all other domestic possibilities have been exhausted. This is the prerequisite for the claims to be admitted before the ECtHR . Accordingly, the State courts are required to deal with human rights violation cases, to the extent that the stateââ¬â¢s constitution permits them. If they find that there is a conflict between the stateââ¬â¢s legislation and the obligations of the Convention, then and only then, the national courts should refer the claims to the ECtHR. In other words, national courts are required to possess knowledge about the provisions of the ECHR and the jurisprudence of ECHRââ¬â¢s institutions. In a similar manner, whenever the Convention imposes certain duties on them, the national courts are required to enforce them. In addition, if the Convention permitted some discretion in these duties, the national courts would have to determine the extent of the applicability of such discretion . The United Kingdom is a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights. However, it had not integrated the principles of the ECHR into its domestic law until the implementation of the Human Rights Act 1998. The European Court of Human Rights had established that the Convention had not imposed any obligation on the parties to accord a direct effect of the Convention rules. However, it was an implied obligation on the part of the members to incorporate the provisions of the ECHR . Unconstitutionality was a concept which was alien to the English courts. However, over the centuries, the judiciary evolved as an important branch in the British constitution; which enabled the Law Lords to declare Acts of Parliament as unconstitutional. Furthermore, the European Court of Human Rights can also rescind some Acts of Parliament, which are in conflict with the ECHR. Despite these developments, the British judiciary had maintained its role as impartial and capable of providing balanced judgements. At that point of time, the Human Rights Act 1998 was enacted, which further influenced the British judiciary, albeit in a positive manner . The ECHR provided the maximum powers to the courts, like, judicial review and the repealment of offending legislation enacted by Parliament. The traditional concept of Parliamentary Sovereignty is slowly vanishing due to the decisions of the courts, which have been empowered by the ECHR. Therefore, it can be concluded that the adoption of the ECHR has significantly modified the role of the judiciary in the UK.

America has always been considered the melting pot of the world, but in recent years with the climb in the number of interracial marriages, (Root 1996) American school systems must learn how to cater to the needs of multiracial students. In this paper, multiracial ââ¬Å"refers to people who are of two or more racial heritages. It is the most inclusive term to refer to people across all racial mixes. Thus it also includes biracial peopleâ⬠(Root 1996). Multiracial students face problems with developing their racial identity and feeling approval from peers who are not mixed, making their experiences in school more difficult especially in a social context (Gibbs 1990 as sited in moss and davis). For current and future educators, this means that there will be a growing need to support students from mixed backgrounds and create curriculums that cater to their needs as well as give those students positive perspectives on their racial make up. This paper will explore the complications that multiracial students face with their identity development and how schools and teachers can positively impact this development. Multiracial students face many problems coming to terms with their racial identity due to the inability to fall under a mono-racial category. In recent years, the amount of biracial births are out numbering the amount of mono-racial births, and these children will soon be entering the school system (Root 1996) with new unique problems when concerning their own racial identity. According to Poston, ââ¬Å"Racial identity is defined as "pride in one's racial and cultural identity" (1990, p. 152 as cited in counseling biracial students). Emily Dickinson comparison of Poems Essay
In 1859 Emily Dickinson wrote a poem about death. In 1861 she rewrote that poem with very different imagery making it a lot darker. The poem itself is rather short, only two stanzas. The first stanza is only changed by one word, though its meaning is significant. The second stanza however changes completely, from light and spring like to dark and wintery. There is also significant change in punctuation and additional dashes in the second piece. This is a classic characteristic of Emily Dickinson writing and since she never explained it to anyone before her death we can only take a guess as to what it really means. In the 1859 version she writes, ââ¬Å"Sleep the meek members of the Resurrectionâ⬠. In the 1861 version it is changed to ââ¬Å"Lie the meek members of the Resurrection-ââ¬Å" . She immediately changes the tone of the poem from being at peace with death and awaiting the resurrection to just being there, not waiting for anything and unaware of what is happening. The w ord ââ¬Å"Lieâ⬠completely cancels the notion of Resurrection in the second piece. Further changes in the first stanza are only in use of punctuation and capitalization. Though it is unclear what Dickinson means by it. The ending of the first stanza in the 1859 version says; ââ¬Å"Rafter of satin, And roof of stone.â⬠In the 1861 version she ends with ââ¬Å"Rafter of Satin- and Roof of Stone!â⬠I feel that in the second version she is ending with much more emotion and putting much more emphasis on the location of the deceased. She seems to be much more impatient or irritated. Maybe due to the fact that these ââ¬Å"meekâ⬠or humble people are lying in such a nice place that is not only made of white marble, but also covered in satin and stone which in the time of this poem being written would be a symbol of wealth and power. In the 1859 version of the poem, Dickinson personifies death with images from spring. Spring is the time of rebirth and resurrection. It is a part of nature and the natural cycle of things. The person or persons that are dead in the 1859 version were once wise people, ââ¬Å"Ah, what sagacity perished here!â⬠They can no longer hear the babbling of the bees or piping of sweet birds. There is no indication of time or who is dead in this version either. When Dickinson rewrites the poem in 1861, she names the fallen as doges. Doges were chief magistrates in Venice in the very early part of Venetian history. Their Diadems have fallen, meaning their power and dignity, have fallen with death. ââ¬Å"Soundless as dots- on a Disc of Snow-ââ¬Å" Death is personified with images from winter. Winter is the end, dark and cold, withà no sign of rebirth or life. No babbling bees or piping birds in winter, just silence and death. Making the overall tone of the poem a lot darker than the first version. Another major difference you will notice with the two poems is the image of Heaven. In the 1859 version there is no clearly portrayed image of Heaven. ââ¬Å"Light laughs the breeze In her Castle above them-ââ¬Å" The person who has died is ââ¬Å"Safe in their Alabaster Chambers-ââ¬Å" as the world continues on into spring above them. It is again portraying resurrection and rebirth with images from spring time. In the later version however, ââ¬Å"Worlds scoop their Arcs- And Firmaments-rowâ⬠is clearly describing Heaven in the sky as being where the deceased is, and the world has stopped in winter as if it all ends with death. There is no resurrection, after death you move on and ââ¬Å"Grand go the Yearsâ⬠after you are gone. As you can see these two poems by Emily Dickinson are very much the same yet also very different. Perhaps it is because of personal changes in her life and her beliefs. Maybe it has to do with changing political atmosphere and the start of the civil war. The changes show a difference in belief when it comes to resurrection and rebirth as well as a change in her belief of Heaven. The changes in p unctuation and capitalization show she is more impatient and maybe even more formal in the later version. It seems to me the second writing of the poem is much more emotionally charged than the first.

Besides that, from an article, ââ¬ËWhy Democracy Is Wrongââ¬â¢, it mentioned that democracy has brought inequality to some countries. In this article, it mentioned that democracy has failed to eliminate inequality at global level and it also mentione d that in some democratic states, there is inequality of wealth and income.In addition, from a research paper, ââ¬ËDemocracy and Economic Developmentââ¬â¢ by Adam Przeworski, from Department of Politics, New York University, he mentioned that democracy in a country does not guarantee a country to be a developed country as he gave one example in Mali where back in 1985, Mali faced a financial crisis and had a low per capita income of $532 and the same problem happened in France where on the same year France had per capita income of $12206 and grew at the rate of 1. 43 percent. On the contrary, democracy is not a primary factor that makes a country to have a financial crisis. I do not believe that democracy necessarily leads to development. I believe that what a country needs to develop is discipline more than democracyâ⬠(Lee Kuan Yew cited in The Economist, August 17,1994, p. 15). From a book, ââ¬ËEconomic Origins of Dictatorship and Democracyââ¬â¢, it mentioned tha t democracy has helped one country to be a developed and one such example given is Singapore. Singapore was ranked in the first position by Bloomberg Businessweek in 2009 as the most competitive country in the world.In addition, from a book written by Rainer Heufers, ââ¬ËThe Politics of Democracy in Malaysiaââ¬â¢, she mentioned that democracy is one of the factors that have helped Malaysia in terms of economics to be one of the most fastest growing counties in this region. (Kurzman, Werum, and Burkhart, 2002) mentioned that democracy is good for investment and at the same time it has a positive effect on economic growth as it grows in a climate of liberty, free-flowing information, and property rights secure from the arbitrary power of the state. . 2ARGUMENT II Democracy also plays a significant role in maintaining a good and a stable political condition in one country. On the other hand, it also brings some negative impacts in politics of a country. In an article written by M anali Oak, she mentioned that not all citizens are aware of the political scenario in their own country thus this somehow makes people making a wrong choice during election and from Christopher Ryan Maboloc, a Chair of the PhilosophyDivision at the Ateneo de Davao University, he mentioned that democracy in politics is weak because the elected party that has won the election does not guarantee a country to be a developed country in one term. And, from Alessandro Pellegata, a graduate from School in Social, Economic and Political Studies, Universita degli Studi in Milano, in his paper, he mentioned that democracy system may lead to higher political corruption compare to some dictatorships and autocracies. This is because some politicians or ministers in a country may have some hidden agendas for their own personal benefits and purposes.For example, from the annual review of corruption in Asia by the Political and Economic Risk Consultancy (PERC) in March 21, 2012, India as the worldâ â¬â¢s largest democracy country is listed as the most corrupted countries in Asia and this followed by Indonesia and Cambodia. However, on the other hand, democracy does help some countries in making their countries become stable. This is proven from an article by Tusha Gupta, where she mentioned that democracy helps in making a stable government as it is based on peopleââ¬â¢s trust and support.Again, she mentioned that democracy will make a country becomes a fair and a just country, as it is based on the principle of equality. This is because the ââ¬Ëreal democracyââ¬â¢ means the equality and freedom of all citizens and having equal access to legislative processes and are generally protected by a constitution (The Democracy Sourcebook, 2003). This can be proven from most of the countries where democracy is applied are developed countries. From World Bank in 2010, it stated that there are thirty two countries listed as developed countries and most of them are democracy co untries.A democracy country has three advantages. There are politically stable, economically stable and internationally stable. This is because most developed countries do not suffer from serious declines in economy and they do not have many problems such as wars with other countries because of the stability in politics and economics and this result to a peaceful country (Richard Bruce, 2011). 3. 3 ARGUMENT III In addition, democracy does in some ways give negative impacts on the moral and ethical aspects. From Tusha Gupta, she mentioned that democracy will lower the moral standard.This is because the candidates will use any kinds of ways even though the ways are considered as unethical as it is to ensure that they will win the election. One such example is money power works hand-in-hand to ensure that one will win and beat the competitors. Other than that, democracy could also give bad influence by the political parties. From an online article by Pearson, it mentioned political par ty is a component and fundamental of a democracy system but unfortunately sometimes the party members overlook the interest of the state for the benefit of their own party.In order to ensure that they will get the power, they will sometimes practise the immoral ways, inciting hatred and also spreading caste feelings. This will affect and give a bad impression on the national character. On the contrary, some academicians and politicians believe that democracy can help in making a good, moral and mature citizen. From Alexis de Tocqueville, a great French political thinker and philosopher, he mentioned that democracy is the first school of good citizenship. Citizens learn their rights and duties from birth till death in it.This is because democracy creates a proper environment for the development of personality instilling good habits among the citizens. From Mansi Chitransi (2009), he mentioned that democracy is part of a social responsibility towards their nation. This is a good moral value where people achieve the sense of contribution for their country through selecting the right people to lead the country. They will have the chance to speak out their views through voting. This will also create the feeling of belongingness towards their society and its well-being.From my personal opinion, democracy does bring benefits to the people of a country. Based on my experience, democracy creates a mature and wise person in thinking. This is because one of the elements in democracy is we are free to choose and to elect anyone to be our representative and in order to choose a person, we have to be really critical in our decision and be aware of the current situation so that we can choose the right person to run the government. 4. 0CONCLUSION In conclusion, democracy has been seen as a major influence in modernising a country. It is proven that democracy has changed many countries from a third orld country to be a first world country and it is proven by the article from T he Council on Foreign Relations, where it says that most democracy countries have performed well in Growth Domestic Product (GDP) per capita per year compared to autocracy countries such as North Korea and Cuba. Ben Franklin and Booker T. Washington
Benjamin Franklin and Booker T. Washington were both American personalities that assumed great importance in the history of the United States. Franklin was born in 1706, in Boston, to an English father and an American mother. Washington, on the other hand, having a family history of slaves, did not know his origins or anything about his ancestries. As the author himself says in his autobiography, ââ¬Å"My life had its beginning in the midst of the most miserable, desolate, and discouraging surroundings. (Washington, p. 15). He only knew his mother, a brother and a sister and he did not even know the time or the place of his birth. In spite of some significant differences in their early lives and, after, along their trajectories, Benjamin Franklin and Booker T. Washingtonââ¬â¢s autobiographies reveal that similarities between them are prevalent. Even separated by a gap of a hundred and fifty years between their birth dates, they shared same thoughts, same principles and resembling aims. Since they have so much in common, it is valid to say that Washingtonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Up From Slaveryâ⬠can be considered a black version of Franklinââ¬â¢s autobiography. Born in a family of slaves, Booker T. Washington was a typical African-American of the 19th century, used to be a working-man. After the Civil War, which had as its main consequence the emancipation of the slaves, Booker worked as a salt-miner and as a coal-miner, before he becomes a houseboy, working as a servant for the wife of the owner of the mines. After that, he applied to Hampton Agricultural Institute and had to split his time between working and studying. Benjamin Franklin was an important personality of American History, a versatile man who was an intellectual, a scientist, an inventor, a diplomat, a politician and best known for being among the political leaders who took part in the American Revolution, by signing the United States Declaration of Independence, as one of the ââ¬Å"Founding Fathersâ⬠. Born to a middle-class family, Franklin went to a grammar school but, for financial reasons, he had to be transferred to another one to study writing and arithmetic. Yet, just like Booker, he was also a working-man during his boyhood. He left school to work as a chandler, making and selling candles with his father, who, later, noticed Franklinââ¬â¢s interest in books, so he was sent to work with his uncle as a printer. Perhaps because of the previous tough time they had in life, each one his particular ways and in specific situations, both of them put all of their efforts on an attempt of eaching better ways of living, and they succeeded. That is why they are considered examples of what is called the ââ¬Å"self-made manâ⬠, the man who makes himself by what he does and command his own destiny; people who rise from poverty and bad living conditions and who are able to achieve success and recognition on their own merit. Since he was not enrolled at school, Benjamin Franklin pro vided himself a self-education, based on the Socratic method, which he ended up abandoning later on. He also was trying to improve his English. Also trying to fight for a chance of acquiring some knowledge, Booker had to cheat on his boss to be on time for school, face his classmates who were more well off than himself and invent a last name, considering it was a request of the school and, as an ex-slave, he did not have one. When he went to Hampton Institute, he was refused shelter for being black and he could not count on anybody, so he had to sleep on the streets and work for meals. He could not even afford his books and clothes, but he did not give in and he did not give up on his studies. Further on, he would say ââ¬Å"Nothing ever comes to one, that is worth having, except as a result of hard workâ⬠(Washington, p. 135). Both Franklin and Washington believed that education and a good job would guide people to self-respect and an economic independence. Moreover, their entrepreneurial spirit was a common outstanding aspect of their personalities. Under his direction, Booker inaugurated the Tuskegee Institute, a school for black people which was focused on industrial training, praising the virtues of thrift and patience, mainly: ââ¬Å"[â⬠¦] by patience and hard work, we brought order out of chaos, just as will be true of any problem if we stick to it with patience and wisdom and earnest effortâ⬠(Washington, p. 60). Earlier, in 1729, Franklin had begun a newspaper called The Pennsylvania Gazette. ââ¬Å"Lose no time; be always employââ¬â¢d in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actionsâ⬠(Franklin, p. 4), this is what leads people to success; industry is the way to get there. Booker T. Washington was a humble man, but he knew how to balance his modesty with a touch of ambition. However, he attributes his success to his belief in many of the virtues that were also praised by Benjamin Franklin, as selflessness, industry, pragmatism and optimism. Franklin based the course of his entire life on a list of th irteen virtues he thought were a must in the process of arriving at moral perfection. There are some of them that can summarize everything he used to preach along his life, which would be: order ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its timeâ⬠; resolution ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolveâ⬠; frugality ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i. e. , waste nothingâ⬠; sincerity ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordinglyâ⬠(Franklin, p. 94); and, of course, industry. Franklin was raised by a Presbyterian family, but he turned out to become a Deist. Thus, he thought he would succeed in the pursuit of his moral improvement as an individual ââ¬â by following some virtues and putting their concept into practice ââ¬â not as a member of any church. Nevertheless, he believed in the existence of a deity, a God that has to do with the creation and maintenance of the world, but has nothing to do with oneââ¬â¢s life. To this God, he thanks for the blessings that were given to him through his way to a successful life. ââ¬Å"And now I speak of thanking God, I desired with all humility to acknowledge that I owe the mentioned happiness of my past life to His kind providence, which lead me to the means I used and gave them successâ⬠(Franklin, p. 7).
